Frederick "Derick" Ostrenko is an Associate Professor at Louisiana State University with a joint appointment in the Digital Art concentration at the School of Art and the Cultural Computing research group at the Center for Computation and Technology (CCT). As current Area Head for Digital Art, he teaches courses in animation, creative coding, 3D graphics, and interactive art. His research focuses on interdisciplinary systems that merge art, technology, and culture, emphasizing immersive media, digital twins, and real-time systems.
Education: MFA in Digital+Media from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
Research interests include custom hardware/software interfaces, generative visualizations, and socially engaged art. Notable projects include Humming Mississippi (sonic art installation analyzing river networks) and IMG 1984 (web project pairing Orwell's text with Google images). He has exhibited globally at venues like the International Symposium on Electronic Art and Currents New Media Festival.
Grants: Secured funding from NASA, NSF, and Louisiana Economic Development. Curated exhibitions include a sonic art show at NIME 2014. Active in SIGGRAPH, organizing global art-technology initiatives.
Labs/Infrastructure: Established LSU's motion capture studio and pioneered student use of SuperMike-II supercomputer for rendering. Collaborations include work with Rashaad Newsome and New Orleans Museum of Art.
